A study of popular, often best selling, American novels of the early national and antebellum periods. Students will read works by Susanna Rowson, James Fenimore Cooper, Herman Melville, George Thompson, Maria Cummins, and Harriet Beecher Stowe as well as historical essays and literary criticism.
